Der japanische Garten im Nordpark mit dem Namen „Japanischer Garten am Rhein“ wurde 1975 von der japanischen Gemeinde in Düsseldorf der Düsseldorfer Bevölkerung übergeben. Ein eigens zu diesem Zweck gegründeter Verein investierte 1,9 Millionen DM, um den 5000 m² großen Garten fertigzustellen. Er wurde von Iwaki Ishiguro und seinem Sohn entworfen und von ihm und sechs weiteren Gärtnern angelegt. Sie folgten dabei dem Typ des Teichgartens, der auch Lustgarten genannt wird. Ein Rundweg führt um den Teich mit einer symbolischen Schiffsanlegestelle und einer Insel und bietet unterschiedliche Ansichten des Gartens. Beschnittene Kiefern und Fächerahorne bestimmen die äußeren Zonen.
